Slow Medicine is:
–a philosophy
–a practice
–a metaphor
Philosophy—based on understanding that Aging is an important element in health and wellness and is the backdrop against which all decisions (particularly medical care decisions) needs to be made.
Practice—Slowing down all decision-making to allow for better understanding, more reflection, and greater discernment promotes better quality care. Learning more about the details of an older individual’s life and circumstances allow tailoring of care to the individual, family and support group (Circle of Concern). Creating “bigger tables” for support and balancing individual and family autonomy provides better perspectives for care and decision-making.
Metaphor—Medical care for elders need to be “re-balanced” to provide for personal, hands-on, humanistic care, which has gone missing over the past several decades. Elders understand that Fast Medicine (high-tech care delivered with an emphasis on efficiency, speed and protocols), while often necessary, can lead elders into circumstances which are both beyond their control and endangering. Slow Medicine promotes quality of life and care via its essential philosophy and practices.
